Fire Academy Physical Agility Test (PAT)

You must pass the Physical Agility Test (PAT) for Seminole State Fire Academy Acceptance.

PAT information will also be available in the Fire Academy Information packet, which is distributed at Fire Academy's student information sessions.

Test Day Procedures

  • Please arrive 15 minutes early for your assigned time.
  • Driver's license required for admittance.
  • No personal items will be permitted in the testing area.
  • All candidates will promptly leave the grounds upon completion of their physical ability test.

What to Bring and Wear

  • DFS-K4-1022 form, EKG strip, and a notarized release form
  • T-shirt (no sleeveless shirts)
  • Long pants/athletic pants conducive to physical activity
  • Athletic shoes
  • Glove (baseball or workout gloves with fingers covered)
  • Water
  • No jewelry is permitted for safety

PAT Course Description

For the PAT, the candidate will wear a helmet, gloves and a 35 pound weight vest throughout the test. The candidate must successfully complete each event and progress through the course with continual movement to receive a passing score. Pausing/resting during any portion of the test will result in an unsuccessful attempt of the PAT.

Task 1: Hose carry up stairs (2 ½” folded hose)

  • Upon instruction, candidate will place folded hose on the preferred shoulder. 
  • Using the exterior stairs, the candidate will carry the folded hose on their shoulder to the 3rd floor of the fire tower. 
  • The candidate will descend the interior stairs of the fire tower and drop the hose where indicated. 
  • Immediately proceed to the next task.

Task 2: Hose drag (50’ section of 2 ½” uncharged hose)

  • Hose will be flaked behind the start point. 
  • Candidate will stage at the start line, positioned next to the hose with either foot depending on the candidate’s preferred shoulder for task, the candidate will place the hose on their shoulder and pull it a distance of 75 feet. 
  • Upon crossing the finish line, drop the hose and immediately proceed to the next task.

Task 3:  Hose pull (50' section of 2 1/2" uncharged hose)

  • Hose will be fully extended at the starting point. 
  • Candidate will kneel on one knee and pull entire section of the hose toward them until the entire section has been pulled to the candidate. 
  • Immediately proceed to the next task.

Task 4:  Fireground walk

  • Candidate will proceed to the starting point and briskly walk indicated course (1 lap around the fire tower). 
  • Immediately proceed to next task.

Task 5: Ladder raise and extension
(mounted ladder only)

  • Step 1 - Candidate will approach secured ladder, using proper body mechanics, raise the ladder from the horizontal to vertical position.

  • Step 2 - Candidate will fully extend and lower the same ladder.

  • Step 3 - Candidate will leave the ladder in vertical position.
  • Immediately proceed to next task.

Task 6: Equipment carry (2 chainsaws)

  • Step 1 - Candidate will pick up ONE chainsaw from the shelf and place it on the ground.

  • Step 2 - Remove the second chainsaw from the shelf and place it on the ground.

  • Step 3 - Grasping both chainsaws, walk 25' around the cone and return to the starting point. 
  • Place both chainsaws on the ground. 
  • Place one chainsaw at a time on the shelf. 
  • Immediately proceed to next task.

Task 7:  Forcible Entry Simulation (Keiser sled)

  • Candidate will pick up the sledgehammer at the sled. 
  • Stand on the raised walkway of the sled. 
  • Move the steel block the length of the sled striking it with the sledgehammer. 
  • Examiner will inform the candidate when the candidate has successfully moved the block to the end point. 
  • Upon completion, PLACE the sledgehammer at the end of the prop. 
  • Immediately proceed to next task.

Task 8: Maze crawl (Limited visibility, limited space)

  • Candidate will crawl through designated portion of the maze.

Task 9: Dummy drag

  • Candidate will grasp the dummy and drag it 50' to the finish line.

  • The ENTIRE dummy must cross the finish point to complete the task. 
  • This is the end on the physical ability test. Your time
    will be recorded by the examiner. 
  • Remove your helmet and gloves and return them to the monitor.
