Construction Exploration Academy
The Wharton-Smith Center for Construction (WSCC) hosted a construction exploration academy on the Heathrow Campus for Seminole County high school students interested in construction management. This exploration academy was held in partnership with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) as a follow-up program for some high schools who participated in NAWIC summer camp the previous week. The exploration academy participants heard from industry guest speakers who were recent WSCC graduates and learned about the various aspects of the construction management profession. As part of the program curriculum, students experimented with virtual design and construction (VDC) technologies and learned how to prepare a construction estimate and schedule on the service learning Catio project that was designed by Seminole State College Interior Design students for Seminole County Animal Services.
Upon completion of the online portion of the academy, the participants earned dual enrollment credits for the BCN 1221 Introduction to Building Construction entry course and applied towards the Building Construction Technology Certificate and Associate in Science, Construction Management degree.
Special thanks to Dr. Tan Qu, Professor/Program Manager, Construction, for his instrumental role in developing and teaching the course.
