Welcome to Le Petit Théâtre
Welcome to Le Petit Théâtre and to The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana The Ugliest Woman of The World by Shaun Prendergast and directed by Joshua Jacobs. I hope you enjoy the way in which we are all challenged by this work, to not only use our imaginations, but also to contemplate and question the notions of beauty and ugliness, of triumph and tragedy. Thank you so much for supporting the arts, and I hope you find your way to our music, art and theatre events throughout the holiday season and in the spring.
College shouldn't be all work and no plays!

Dean, Arts and Communication
Director Notes
Julia Pastrana is not a fictional character. I hope you know that she was a real person, just like you and me. These sad events that take place in front of you are true to historical events that happened to her. Sometimes the events in our lives are ugly and they can hurt in the moment, but under the surface, possibly over time, those events become clearer and are easier to learn from. I know everyone has gone through an event in their life that they may not wish upon anybody else. Julia’s life was one of tragedy and strife and I hope you may be able to see you are not alone. I hope you also notice and appreciate there are people in your life who care about you.
This script of Julia Pastrana has been performed only a handful of times in America. There have only been about four other productions of it within the U.S. The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, The Ugliest Woman in the World was written by an Englishman, Shaun Prendergast in 2002. So, those of you are seeing this production and thinking this happened long ago, you may be in for a surprise. Julia was embalmed and continued to be displayed after death. Yet, Julia’s body was only recently buried in February of 2013.
Prendergast has a stipulation to his script that it must be performed in the dark. We agree that not being able to see forces the events to be played in your imagination. I have also added some smells to bring the audience more into the action and really feel like they are in the room watching the events taking place.
I believe after experiencing this performance that you may have a better appreciation for living. That you may even look forward to the next chapter of your life. Life is not always bleak, but those moments that are, help you learn from them and become a better you. Days do get better. A new day dawns, and we can face it with fresh breath and an outlook that says, “Today is going to be a good day!”
Thank you,
~Josh Jacbos

Harriett Lake - Seminole State College Theatre's Benefactor
Harriett Lake’s philanthropic influence is evident throughout Central Florida. Not only was she a cheerleader for the arts, but a funder as well. Because of her support, Seminole State’s theatre program will continue to reap the benefits of her generosity for years to come.
Seminole State acknowledges with gratitude the $500,000 gift from Harriett Lake in 2015 that is now an endowed fund, honoring her legacy as reflected in the daily arts activity of the many students and patrons who attend theatre productions at the Seminole State College of Florida.
Harriett Lake grew up in a small town in western Pennsylvania, served in the Marines during the Second World War, and moved to Florida after the war. When she met her husband HY there, they moved to Central Florida, where Hy was a developer. They made much of their money together developing land in Central Florida. The couple jointly donated vast sums to local Jewish temples and other nonprofit organizations. HY passed away in 2010, but by then Harriett was a reigning philanthropist. There are more than 25 sites in Central Florida that bear Harriett’s name. She passed away in 2018.
“I am the keeper of the arts alive, because somebody has to do it, and I now think of myself as an occupation.” – Harriett Lake
