Instrumental Music Concert!

The Music at Seminole State Series is committed to providing entertaining programming for our community, while preparing our Music Pathway students for further study at the university level. The department offers Faculty Recitals, showcasing the excellent talent and teaching of the Seminole State Music faculty, Student Recitals, providing opportunities for our students to showcase what they are studying and Concerts from the many Seminole State Ensembles (Concert Chorale, SeminoleSound, Symphonic/Community Band and Community Choir, Jazz Ambassadors and Jazz Combo). The department offers credit and non-credit experiences, so please consider joining us if you would like to participate as an ensemble member!

We hope this evening’s performance will bring you some cheer and delight. On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the department, thank you very much for your support.

James J. Smisek, DMA - Dr. Smisek earned his A.A. Degree at Seminole Community College under Dr. Bill Hinkle in 1986 and in 1989, earned his B.A. Degree in Music Education at the University of Florida, studying with Dr. David Waybright and Gary Langford. While in college, Smisek performed with several ensembles that included the Mike Roylance Brass Quintet, area church orchestras & praise bands, Suncoast Sound Drum & Bugle Corps and performed regularly in the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom. After graduating, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a trumpet player during the Gulf War. In 1999, Smisek earned his Master’s Degree in Music Education at Rollins College, where he studied with Dr. John Sinclair and Chuck Archard. Smisek returned to Florida in 1992 to start teaching high school band and finished 12 years of teaching high school and one year of middle school before moving to North Carolina to attain his doctorate degree. In 2006, Smisek earned the Doctorate in Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and studied with Dr. John Locke. After teaching at Samford University in Birmingham for eight years as the Director of Bands, he came back home to Central Florida. He is currently Professor of Instrumental Music and Director of Bands at SSC where he also teaches Jazz & Blues History, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Symphonic/ Community Band, Jazz Ambassadors Big Band and Jazz Combo.
