Principles of Managerial Accounting - ACG2071 Class 7844
Date: August 25 to December 13, 2016

This course introduces the student to the use of accounting information by managers. Topics include the use of accounting information for planning and control, capital investment, performance evaluation, decision-making, cash flow statements and financial statement analysis.

Pre-reqs: Prerequisite: ACG 2021.

Measurable Course Objectives

Measurable Course Objectives are outcomes students are expected to achieve by the end of the course.

  • Distinguish between financial accounting and managerial accounting and understand the basic terminology involved in accounting for costs.
  • Calculate costs and journalize transactions using the job order cost system.
  • Calculate costs and journalize transactions using the process cost system.
  • Calculate total variances and subvariances for direct materials, direct labor and factory overhead.
  • Calculate the break-even point and other statistics using cost-volume-profit analysis.
  • Prepare financial statements for a firm where production and sales are not equal using absorption costing and variable costing.
  • Distinguish between centralized and decentralized operations and between cost centers, profit centers, and investment centers.
  • Prepare an income statement through departmental margin.
  • Use rate of return on investment, profit margin and investment turnover to analyze the performance of investment centers.
  • Make operating decisions based on differential analysis.
  • Calculate product price using the cost-plus approach based on total cost, product cost, and variable cost.
  • Perform a discounted cash flow analysis.
  • Calculate various financial ratios.
  • Prepare a statement of cash flows.
  • Journalize transactions involved in bonds payable.

To succeed in an online course, you need to be:

  • motivated
  • self-directed
  • willing to work on your own

Online courses are not for everyone. They are neither easier nor more difficult than on-campus courses, but they do require more dedication and self-discipline from the student.  If you like to interact face-to-face with a professor and classmates, or if you have difficulty managing your time, this might not be the best course delivery mode for you.  However, if you can read and understand technical information, follow instructions as given, and solve computer problems on your own without asking for much help, online instruction should work well for you. Good time management skills, self-discipline, and motivation are required to successfully complete an online course.

Computer Difficulties

Students will have access to computer labs with the required hardware and software on the Sanford/Lake Mary and Altamonte Springs Seminole State campuses. If you experience technical difficulties with your personal computer, be prepared to come to a campus lab to complete your assignments as no extensions will be granted due to computer problems. Sakai Learning Management System Information

Sakai is the one of the online learning management systems used at Seminole State College.  If you are enrolled in an online, online/campus, hybrid, or web-enhanced campus class, you may need to log in to Sakai to access the site for your course.  

Sakai course sites will not be available until the first day of class.  If you register during the add/drop period, there may be a slight delay (up to 24 hours) in the activation of your user ID and password. If you are unable to log into Sakai after the add/drop period, please complete the eLearning Online Course Problem Form, and the eLearning staff will check on your account.

  • USERNAME = same as your MySeminoleState username
  • PASSWORD = first and last initial in UPPERCASE followed by your birthdate in YYMMDD format

Recommended browsers for Sakai include Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer (Note: IE9 users will need to enable compatibility mode).  Your browser must be set to accept cookies.

Sakai Test-Taking Tips - In order to avoid potential problems during an exam, we recommend that you:

  • Don't use mobile devices such as phones or tablets.
  • Use a supported web browser such as the latest version of Firefox, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer.
  • Make sure that you DO NOT have multiple windows or tabs open while testing.
  • Make sure you have a dependable internet connection; 
  • DO NOT use your browser back and forward buttons. Always navigate within Sakai.
  • For timed tests, remember that once you begin the test, the timer will continue to count down.  This is true if you lose internet connection, your browser crashes, or you simply exit and close your browser window.
  • Make sure that you only click on the "Begin Assessment" button ONCE when starting a test.
  • Make sure that you only click on the "Submit for Grading" button ONCE when submitting a test.

Class Participation

In order to be considered an active participant the in class, you must access Sakai several times a week. Important information will be posted in the Announcements section.

Participation in the online forums is required. Points for participation are earned by posting in the forums along with reading posts authored by the instructor or other students. The minimum posting requirement is two posts per Chapter (Topic) this can be a response to a question posted by the instructor or a question posted by another student pertaining to the subject matter covered in the chapter.

Class Assignments

Assignments are problems that promote your ability to apply knowlege and communicate course information professionally and within the context of business and accounting rules and standards.

Homework assignments for this course will be completed online at the publisher's website, You can complete the graded problems online and received immediate feeedback on your work.

Class Project

The project for this course will be based on computing and analazing the standard financial ratios of two competing companies. Details for the project will be located in Sakai.

Classroom Guidelines

The 5 unit exams will be administered though McGraw Hill Connect .

The final comprehensive exam must taken at a SSC testing center during the 5 day exam window. If you are out of the Central Florida area please contact me to make alternative exam arrangements. Unless Otherwise noted, students are expected to memorize the formulas and computations used to solve problems. Anything presented in class, in the text, on homework, quizzes or previous exams is subject to testing. Students may not leave the room during an exam unless they are ready to turn in their exam. In addition, all personal communication devices should be turned off and put away.

If you do not take an exam at the scheduled time, you will automatically receive a zero for that exam. The purpose of this policy is fairness. If you experience a medical emergency or death in the family, you must notify me prior to the exam. The reason for missing the exam  and verification of that reason must be provided in writing. Make up exams and assignments will only be allowed at the sole discretion of the instructor.

Academic Integrity

Students who share their work for the purpose of cheating on class assignments or tests are subject to the same penalties as the student who commits the act of cheating.

When cheating or plagiarism has occurred, instructors may take academic action that ranges from denial of credit for the assignment or a grade of "F" on a specific assignment, examination or project, to the assignment of a grade of "F" for the course. Students may also be subject to further sanctions imposed by the judicial officer, such as disciplinary probation, suspension or dismissal from the College. Withdrawal Policy

A student desiring to withdraw from a course after the add/drop period should initiate withdrawal procedures with an instructor or counselor. Withdrawals are not official until the withdrawal form is completed and given to the Office of Enrollment Services and Registrar. Withdrawal deadlines are published in the official College Catalog Academic Calendar.

Attendance Policy

The College recognizes the correlation between attendance and both student retention and achievement. Per College Policy 3.060 Students are expected to attend all class meetings of all courses for which they are registered. The College Attendance Procedure is located in College Procedure 4.0900 and is available online at

For online classes, attendance is determined by consistently logging in and accessing the course content and completing courses in accordance with the syllabus. Simply logging in to an on-line class does NOT count as attendance. Students must engage in an academically-related activity.

In this course, attendance during the first week of class is signified by completing the Getting Started Activities including posting an introduction in the Meet the Class Forum and registering your connect account. If these items are not completed, than a student may recieve a W4 and be withdrawn from the class. For the remainder of the course attendance will be signified by participating in the Sakai forums on a weekly basis.
